Strength training workouts are best for shaping and toning your body by creating lean muscle mass, whereas muscle workouts are used to build more muscle and allow you to bulk up a little bit. The choice is yours to decide what workout is best for you. It depends on the result you are looking for and what kind of exercise equipment you have access to. If you have access to a lot of machines you may chose to do a strength workout. If all you have are free weights, then a muscle workout would be best.
Strength workouts generally consist of doing 3 sets of 12-15 repetitions each. Muscle workouts are designed to fatigue the muscles and therefore you would use a heavier weight and do more sets of fewer repetitions. You can also decide to use a combination of the two types of workouts. For one or two weeks do only compound muscle workouts because these require more resting days between workouts. Free weights are used for targeted muscle areas and so you should work one muscle group at a time with as much weight as you can. For the third and fourth weeks use the strength training machines. Using the machines works more than one muscle at a time, helping to develop the muscles that the other workouts may miss. Either way, you will get stronger and build more muscle.
